I am a girl who loves classy and Victorian things as well as country things... thus my blog name! :)
Several years back, my dad woke me from my beauty sleep at four in the morning and we headed out to the woods. It was dark, cold, and quiet as we silently set up a blind and settled in for the morning. As the sun came up I was excited to hear the noise of a distant gobbler and knew for sure that he was headed our way.
So we waited and waited and waited and waited some more (I can't stress how much we waited). God must have been giving this poor girl a lesson on patience that morning! Lunch time came around and I was so tired of sitting there so I talked my dad into tracking down the turkey. Off we went, dad with all the supplies, and me with the gun. I was thoroughly convinced that someone had warned the turkey that we were coming and they had all hidden out. So I began to pray that God would send us a "stupid" turkey.
The hunt looked hopeless and we decided to go home. It was at this time that we took a "short cut" and ended up in a swamp area filled ( and I mean FILLED) with mosquitoes! Then it began to rain and all I wanted to do was get home in my nice warm covers and eat some food. Suddenly dad stopped me and said he saw a turkey but he thought it was a hen. As it got closer, we saw that it was actually a Jake! I moved to the other side of the road at this time and I am almost certain that turkey saw me , but instead of running away the "stupid" thing ran right at us. I was determined not to shake before I shot but that long legged thing, running straight at me was about all I could take. "shoot" I could hear my dad say. " I am trying!"
Finally, I got a shot off but my excitement dropped as the turkey flew off. This was short lived because the turkey flew into a tree and dropped to the ground; however, the chase was not over yet! The turkey began to run along the side of the road and I ran on the road beside him. Bang! I fell on the ground... Bang! on the ground again. This replayed six times before a miracle happened and that turkey laid down right in front of me and just looked at me. " you want me to shoot?" dad asked. " I made it this far" I replied with a deep breath.
So, yes I got my stupid turkey and no, I have not had any luck with getting one since :) Think it could have something to do with lack of target practice?
That's pretty cool. So have you hunted any other kinds of animals and if so where they as eventful as this one.
ReplyDeleteI have had a few deer hunting trips but nothing that exciting :) once I went with my brother and dad.. my brother shot a buch and then they were just gaping at the thing while a huge doe stood in front of me( but they were too busy to hand over the gun!)
